Tools & techniquesA tactile promotional artifact for Sherman Alexie's short story What You Pawn I Will Redeem — the account of Jackson Jackson, a homeless Spokane man on a 24-hour quest to redeem his grandmother's stolen powwow regalia. The journal extends that narrative into a participatory object: through archival layering, distressed materials, and embedded story fragments, it turns the reading into a lived, collectible system of evidence.
The logo repeats the letter J into a symmetrical emblem drawn from the project's title. Designed to function as a stamp, it gives the journal's layered chaos one consistent graphic anchor while keeping the handmade, distressed feel. Every object inside works as narrative evidence rather than decoration — the lottery ticket and receipt reference specific moments in the story; the five-dollar bill, liquor labels, and police patch speak to instability, authority, and economic precarity.
Authored elements are set in John Doe, a distressed typewriter face whose irregularity echoes the story's themes. Sporadic hand-stamped timestamps mirror the fragmented structure of the narrative, and the repeatable stamp system lets the reader keep adding entries — turning a promotional object into a participatory narrative tool.
